Text in solidarity to the movement against the gold mines in Greece

In Greece, under the pretext of the economic and debt crisis, a looting has started, evolving around the privatisation of common goods and public services. Many “investors” with the assistance of the government and, stripped of any concept of planning, environmental protection, respect on the citizens and the nature, pursue a “development”, completely catastrophic for the people, that only benefits the national and international capital.

A good example of this type of “development”, that represents an outrageous environmental, economical and political scandal, is the gold mines in Northern Greece and especially the gold mines of Halkidiki, where the mining company has settled, after a few laws were created to assist them with the investment. The area that was given to the company by the Greek state, sums up to a little bit over 30.000 hectares of ancestral forest and, together with the property of the old mines, and all these for 11 million  Euros! When the company broke into fragments and resold its property in Halkidiki to another company after a short while, it profited the amount of 2 billion euro!

The environmental consequences from the destruction of the forest and the open pit mines (deforestation, millions of tones of dust and atmospheric pollutants emitted in a region surrounded by villages, pollution of groundwater and devastating effects on water resources, subsequent health issues etc) have been documented by dozen of organisations and scientists and have been demonstrated by the rich international experience of the impacts of gold mines worldwide.  The economic impact will also be huge for the residents of the region because the mines are competing with the hitherto activities of the residents that include tourism, agriculture, fisheries, bee breeding etc and this can in no way be compensated, neither quantitatively nor qualitatively, with the jobs that the mines will create.

Lately, - because there is a strong movement of resistance in this investment - , the Greek government and the police have started a terrorizing campaign that includes raiding at the houses of residents, captures and interrogations of people for hours, beatings, assaults with smoke bombs and chemicals at schools, forcefully taking DNA samples and generally, a complete distortion of the lives of the people with the goal to surrender.

Because in the Europe of the crisis, there has to be an exit towards the right direction and mainly there has to a turn to real democracy, we, the undersigned   

·       Declare our solidarity with the struggle of the residents against the gold mines

·       Say NO to the repression

·       Say NO to the environmental and local-economy catastrophic “investments”

Texte en solidarité avec le mouvement contre les mines en Grèce

En Grèce, sous  prétexte de la crise économique et de la dette, un pillage a commencé lié à la privatisation des biens communs et des services publics. Plusieurs «investisseurs» avec l’aide du Gouvernement et, sans aucun souci de protection environnementale, de respect pour les citoyens et la nature, sont à la poursuite d’un «développement» qui est totalement désastreux pour le peuple et qui est seulement au service du capital national et international.

Un bon exemple de ce type de «développement», qui représente un énorme scandale environnemental, économique et politique, est celui des mines d’or au nord de la Grèce et, surtout, les mines d’orcelles de Halkidiki. L’entreprise minière a pu s’y installer après la création de lois spécifiques lui facilitant cet investissement. La région qui a été donnée à l’entreprise par l’Etat grec couvre  un peu plus de 30.000 hectares de forêt millénaire, ainsi que d'anciennes mines. Tout ça pour 11 millions d’euros. Et, peu de temps après, quand l’entreprise a été fragmentée et a revendu sa propriété de Halkidiki à une autre entreprise, elle a bénéficiéé d’une somme de 2 milliards d’euros!

Les conséquences environnementales, sanitaires et socialesde la destruction de la forêt et des mines ouvertes (déforestation, des millions de tonnes de poussière et de polluants atmosphériques émis dans une région avec des villages, pollution des eaux souterraines et effets dévastateurs sur les ressources en eau, conséquences sur la santé, etc. ) ont été mises en évidence par une douzaine d’organismes et de scientifiques   internationaux et avérées par les multiples expériences catastrophiques d'extraction aurifère dans le monde.  L’impact économique pour les habitants de la région sera énorme car les mines sont contraires à leurs activités traditionnelles:  tourisme, agriculture, pêche, apiculture, etc. Cet impact ne peut être en aucun cas compensé - ni au niveau quantitatif ni au niveau qualitatif - par les postes de travail générés par l'activité minière. 

Un fort mouvement se développe a Halkidiki contre cet investissement. La seule réponse gouvernementale et policière est la répression : une campagne de terreur a commencé avec des descentes dans les maisons, des arrestations et des interrogatoires pendant des heures, des coups, des attaques avec bombes lacrymogènes y compris contre des écoles, du prélèvement forcé d'ADN et, en général, une destruction de la vie des habitants afin qu’ils abandonnent leur lutte contre les mines. 

Dans cette Europe de crise, il doit y avoir une issue vers la bonne direction et, surtout, il doit y avoir un virage vers la vraie démocratie, nous qui signons ce texte:

•    Nous disons NON à la répression

•    Nous disons NON aux «investissements» qui détruisent l’environnement et les économies locales
